Z - Zealous

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Zealous
She is devoted and diligent in her tasks. Whatever she takes on, she applies herself with gusto. There's no halfway for a fearless southern girl. She attacks climbing a rock wall with the same fervor she attacks making brownies for the bake sale. In both cases, her best effort shines. If she commits to a committee, she sees it through to the end. A fearless southern girl's zealousness is the reason why she also has to fearlessly say no sometimes.

Y - Youthful

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Youthful
She refuses to age. Two things: 1) Age in terms of years is not frowned upon, here. Wear your earned wisdom like a merit badge; 2) Youthfulness does not require plastic surgery. A fearless southern girl is youthful in energy and spirit. A youthful person's words reflect action and activity, rather than complaints and sedentary ways. A youthful person maintains optimism and is receptive to change.

X - Xenial

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Xenial
She extends hospitality to strangers. It's one thing to take a casserole to someone she knows, but quite another to give her coat to a total stranger. A fearless southern girl doesn't place reserves on her hospitality. She welcomes all. Okay, she probably doesn't open her door to ax murderers, but how many of those actually knock?

W - Witty

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Witty
She cleverly expresses herself. This goes beyond the gift of gab. She's quick to make connections between unrelated ideas or events and shares her observations for the enjoyment of her conversation partners. Her sense of humor and good-natured mirth rope in others. She speaks in metaphor and simile and sees humor in the unusual and in herself.

V - Vibrant

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Vibrant
She is exciting, stimulating and lively. Her fearlessness enables her to be vibrant. She has so much to add to conversations and so many adventures to share. And because she constantly seeks to learn more, see more, do more, she asks other people about themselves and listens to what they have to say. Her energy and enthusiasm are pervasive.

U - Understated

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Understated
She shows restraint. Like an elegant home in which the style and design are not over-done, she too steers clear of the gaudy and the attention-grabbing. Yes, she should always look put-together, but a flashy ring on every finger or baubles that drag her earlobes to her shoulders draw attention to her insecurities. Sequins an noon are a no-no. We're not soap opera stars. We're fearless southern girls. Face those insecurities. Don't over dress them and think you've camouflaged them from other people or yourself.

T - Talented

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Talented
She possesses special gifts and abilities. This doesn't necessarily mean she can sing, dance, or twirl a baton, though she likely can. It simply means she has identified something, or a few things, at which she is adept, and she has honed her skills through persistence and practice and reading and rehearsal and commitment. She actively engages in using her talent(s), and though she would not brag, neither would she diminish her exceptional gift in the eyes of others.

S - Settled

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Settled
She leads a calm, composed, stable existence. She does not entertain ruminations about what she does not have, what she has not done. She doesn't wile away her days yearning for things to be different. She accepts that for the moment everything is exactly how it should be according to plan. And if she's unhappy with it, she develops a plan for change and then implements it. Even so, she is content until change comes.

R - Radiant

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Radiant
She glows. The only way to get that glow is to first glisten. The only way to glisten is to get up and get moving. A fearless southern girl is always in motion; not the kind of nervous movement that fritters away the hours, but purposeful activity. She's energized by expending energy, both physical and mental. Whether working in her garden or running a marathon, planning a charity book fair or belting out hymns in the choir loft, the effort will add to her glow, her radiance.

Q -Quirky

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Quirky
She is as unpredictable as a springtime tornado. No one can put her in a nutshell. She reserves the right to change to her mind and change her course without explanation or the need to feel the least bit guilty. She's the corporate ladder-climber who one day decides to leave it behind to become a river guide. She's the mom who loads all of the kids in the car to go ice cream and ends up in Niagara Falls. She refuses to let anyone put her under a thumb.

P - Passionate

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Passionate
She feels strongly toward her interests and causes. Passion for something is different from emotional drama. Women who resort to drama seek attention. Women who feed their passion seek personal growth. Passionate women promote ideas and issues and activities, not themselves and their emotional ups and downs.

O - Optimisitic

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Optimistic
She expects good things to happen. A rainy day in Georgia doesn't get her down, because she knows the sun will shine tomorrow. Positive thinking turns around a world of troubles.

N - Noble

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Noble
She admirably exemplifies dignity. And she not only comports her own self in a dignified manner, but she also concerns herself with the dignity, and protection thereof, of those around her. Everything she says, everything she does indicates self-respect. Thus, it follows that a woman who respects herself also shows regard for her neighbors, friends and fellow community members. In other words, she comports herself well without being a snob.

M - Mighty

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Mighty
She possesses exceptional power and strength. She's a force to be reckoned with. She stands unfaltering in the face of disappointments, defeats, failures, intimidations and affronts. She holds her head high, he back straight and her shoulders back. She descends from a long line of matriarchs who overcame all obstacles in the way of their destinies and she continues to provide that example to the young women following in her footsteps.

L - Lovely

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Lovely
She has a beauty that appeals to the heart and the eye. Her personal appearance is not slovenly nor neglected. She takes care of her physical aspects, yet she is not vain. She is humble and kind and generous so that her inner beauty matches her outer beauty.

K - Kind

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Kind
She shows compassion and benevolence to those around her. She does not perpetuate gossip. More than that, she protects the subject of it by pointing out fallacious words to the their utterers. She speaks kindly of her neighbors and her mother-in=law. She looks for the good everyone and strives to bring it out in each person she meets. Her words are tender. Her actions are helpful.

J - Just

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Just
She is guided by truth, reason, and fairness and makes decisions according to her principles. She doesn't take advantage of others in social or business dealings. She does the right thing even when it's easier to do the wrong thing. It is quite difficult to truly be a lady and fail to behave justly.

I - Intelligent

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Intelligent

She thinks logically and quickly comprehends new information. While she refuses to lord her smarts over others, she never plays them down either. It's a fine line she walks, but when faced with a novel problem, she will solve it to the benefit of all, without ever belittling anyone involved.

H - Handy

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Handy
She can use tools skillfully to get things done. No one promises us that we'll always have a man around the house, and even if we do we might not want to around for him to fix what's broke. A fearless southern girl can hang a picture, tighten a leaky faucet, check the oil, start the lawnmower, paint the kitchen cabinets and caulk the bathtub. She might pay someone else to do it, but not because the project intimates her.

G - Gracious

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Gracious
She takes mercy on others and treats them with benevolence and kindness. A gracious hostess never remarks to her guest, or anyone else, for that matter, that the guest is under-dressed, overly late or in error any way. She is quick to fogive oversights and lack of knowledge. She welcomes with unsoaring kindness all who enter her home. She applies no blame or fault where it is not due or honestly earned.

F - Friendly

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Friendly
She provides approval, support, and help to those around her. To her child who voluntarily cleaned his room and made his bed, though not perfectly, she gives specific compliments in regard to what he did well. To the taxed teacher who needs to know she's making a difference, she says thank you for taking personal interest in the students and sends in supplies enough to last to the end of the year. For the older man trying to get his groceries into the trunk of his car without letting his cart roll away, she stops, holds the handle and, to help him save face, asks if she can take it into the store when he is finished.

E - Empathic

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Empathic
She demonstrates compassion and sincere understanding for others. Instead of leaping to judgment or criticism, she sensitively places herself in the position of another. She thoughtfully considers how others feel or what their personal circumstances may be like. She expresses genuine joy for others when they experience success, and she grieves with them when they suffer loss. She realizes that the outward picture of a person's actions and situations is often not the whole picture, nor an accurate one.

D - Dependable

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Dependable
She follows through and she earns people's trust. When she makes a commitment, she delivers, seldom failing to produce what she promises. Whether she's in charge of the preschool Christmas party, the Junior League Festival of Trees, or the make-or-break acquisition for a Fortune 500 company, she honors her responsibility for the project.

C - Clever

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Clever
She is inventive and original. Never does she worry about what she hasn't got, because she uses all that she does have to her advantage. Gone With the Wind provides the best example: After Atlanta was burned and Scarlett fell into poverty, she snatched down Tara's velvet curtains and whipped herself up a fine dress. A fearless southern girl adeptly repurposes old things to suit new needs without ever batting an eye.

B - Bold

A fearless southern girl is . . .

Bold
She considers events and opportunities beyond the usual limits of conventional thought or action. In other words, she doesn't let shoulds and oughts hold her back or dictate what she says and does. She's willing to think outside of the box imposed by cultural norms. When everyone else is delivering pineapple casserole to the bereaved, she's delivering a stack of newspapers with the obituary. When other folks are throwing wild-growing lambs-quarters in the weed pile, she's cooking them up for dinner.
